Disappearing 'run' list

W

William B. Lurie

For a long time, I had several commands in the 'Browse'
list, available when I entered Start>>Run>>....
things line 'cmd' and 'msconfig' and 'regedit'...
conveniently there without need to type them in.

Today I went there and the list was blank, empty......
I don't know what I could have done to make the list
get cleared since a few days ago.

Any clues?

Hi,

Clear documents lately? That "clear" button cleans out a lot of different
MRU (most recently used) lists.

Well, I did 2 things that I forgot to mention.....I installed all
of the new Windows Updates (except .NET)..... and I did do
Accessories>>SysTools>>Defrag and also >>Disk Cleanup,
but I don't recall those ever having that effect before. And on
boot up this morning, it showed me the "Sys Config Utility" warning
window when I've made no changes there in a week. I think I'd
better do a complete system virus scan pronto.

Causes (Info) :
1) A very simple cleaner program
2) Your [anti-virus/firewall/spyware-remover] (Because of your
security/privacy)
3) Editing registry (The list items are stored in registry)
4) Autocomplete is OFF (That is why there is no list displayed)

For the 4th cause, you can verify it :
Go to
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU"
and check that the items are there or not. If yes then turn
Autocompete on in IE.

Thank you. But (and this is not pertinent)....
I don't use IE.... ever.....for anything.

None of the others are any different but the list never disappeared
before. Only thing I did recently was download and install, from
Windows Update, the latest "Security Updates".

There are many ways that the Run History can get cleared. Here are a few
more...

Start Menu RUN history (RunMRU) is cleared on every restart

Thank you, Wes. But this occurred exactly one time, and for several
days of running, and shutting down and starting cold, it has
not happened again. I don't believe it to be in that link.
I'll watch it....

Stop thinking about the past because it can be anything and if you are
worried about future then just backup/export the registry key regularly that
i mentioned in previous reply.

Good advice. So many of these malfunctions have mysterious
and untraceable causes, one just has to regard the OS as so
horribly complex that they can't be pinned down.
