disabling / removing simple file sharing in windows

windows xp pro:

under folder options > view tab: last option is "Use Simple File
Sharing" and its unchecked, but i'm stuck using simple file sharing.
how can i reset this so that i am NOT using simple file sharing (where
in the registry is this key located and or how do i re-register the
assc. files to enable classic nt style security tab)?

yes, it was working before and i checked for viruses, malware, spyware,
etc. and even checked my security settings (this is an administrators
account).

*TIA*

Why do you think that simple file sharing is still enabled? See the link
below on what registry key to check and configure. --- Steve

Registry Key and Values
When security settings are set in Windows XP, the following registry key is
used:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
The values are: . ForceGuest=1: Use this value to force guests on
. ForceGuest=0: Use this value to force guests off

because when it was checked the security tab was missing and when it
was not checked the security tab was there and then now for some reason
the security tab is missing even though the box is not checked.

And the virus/malware status of the computer is...? If you think the box
is clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

What changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

I would check the registry key I referenced to see if simple file sharing is
indeed disabled or not. If the registry key shows it is disabled then you
have some other problem as to why you can not see the security tab. The
first think I would verify is that you are using NTFS file system and not
FAT32 which will never show a security page for folders. If you are using
NTFS then possibly a Group Policy setting is hiding the security tab. ---

Use gpedit.msc to open local Group Policy and go to user
configuration/administrative templates/Windows components/Windows Explorer
and find the setting for "remove security tab" and make sure it is set to
disabled. If the computer is a member of an Active Directory domain then
there could be domain level policy enforcing that setting which running
rsop.msc on the computer should show and which Group Policy was applying the
setting. Also see the link below for a possible explanation. Even though it
applies to NT4.0 I have seen that it also works in XP if the user does not
have permissions to the Rshx32.dll file in windows\system32 directory. It
may also be worthwhile to try an boot into Safe Mode to see if you can see
the security tab then. The built command line tool cacls can also be used to
view and manage NTFS permissions. I also had an XP install where the
security tab could not be seen anymore and though I believe the computer was
free of malware and spyware and I had to do a repair/upgrade install to
resolve the problem which was not a big deal since I have fast cable
internet except that I needed to install the service pack again and then all
critical updates from Windows Updates after doing such. --- Steve
