disable welcome screen

Hi,

I want to disable my welcome screen (I am the only user on this computer)
and go straight to the desktop after boot. Help says that you can't do this
in Vista, but I saw the option to disable it when I was getting tech support
from Dell for another issue. I just don't remember where the option was to
uncheck the box. Can anyone help me please?

I think you are talking 2 different things, the "Welcome Center" has a
checkbox, that's the screen you get after a new install, I think you
mean the login screen that has the user ID buttons?

I don't think you can disable it, but you can set your password blank
although that is not a great idea.

Hi David,

Click Start, select Run, then type in "control userpasswords2" without the
quote marks, and hit enter. Uncheck the box "Users must enter a username
and password to use this computer", hit Apply. In the next dialogue box,
select the user that you want to automatically login with, enter username
and password if it has one.

This will log the account in automatically straight to the desktop. You
will still be able to logoff and logon with other accounts if you have any.

Thank you that is great - I do not have to break off from my cup of coffee
to clik on my name now.

I agree you cannot be plain but how about a photo to prove it?

Are there not some things that cease to work with blank password
accounts? I thought something to do with networking, maybe accessing
shared files on another machine or something. Of course that may not
matter to David but if something fails in future having a blank
password. (I realize your solution does not limit the user to a blank
password - just curious if you knew of any instances).

Hi Charlie,

My partner does not have a password set on his Vista Ultimate PC, but so far
we have not come across any networking problems. On our home network, we
have turned off password-protected sharing.

You do need a password on your account if you want to Remote Desktop into
your pc though. (Group Policy default setting of "Limit use of blank
password to console login only").
