I have had MSN Messenger for al very long time and never had any problems
updating it when prompted BUT tried to upgrade to 7.5 from 7.0 a while back.
Got this error message....Cannot access network location
%userprofile%\StartMenu\programs\startup. Where in the world is this Profile
and what is wrong with it? I tried to remove Messenger using add/remove
programs and same error message. Tried to repair and same thing. Bottom line
is no matter where or how I try to remove/upgrade/repair I get the same fatal
error and the process won't work and I have to cancel. I have corresponded
with MS on this and followed all their instructions and all my settings are
correct and my User permissions are correct. I am the only user of this
computer and am the Administrator. I have used search and removed all
folders/etc where Messenger appears but still cannot remove it from
add/remove or reinstall Messenger from scratch or perform update. I am sure
there are registy entries that I may need to remove so I can try to start
from scratch so can you tell me where they are? I hate fooling with registry
but am at my wits end. All I want is My Messenger back. I have saved my
contacts to a file. Its driving me nuts.

The registry tweak which you tried is applicable to MSN Messenger 4.x,
this restriction has been removed from version 5 of the software.

We tried that but we'll try it again.
:
Start>Run>type MSCONFIG and click OK
Go to the Startup tab and uncheck msmsgs
Click Apply Close and reboot.

I put this registry policy
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client in a lab
where the user account has Power User rights and Instant Messenger still
opens or starts. I've added PreventRun and PreventAutoRun dword values =1
but Messenger still runs. Any way I can disable this under Power User?
