DirectX Reboots computer when testing direct3d

Not sure this is the appropriate forum for this question but here goes. I
have Windows2000 installed with 256MB RAM, 750Mhz processor and an Nvidia
Geforce FX 5600 video card. I had a Geforce 2 prior and the same incident
occurs. Whether it's Directx8 or 9 I cannot test Direct3d without the machine
rebooting itself. I had Win98 prior and the cards worked fine. Any ideas? I
have the latest drivers from Nvidia and have downloaded all possible updates
for Win2k and nothing seems to work. Motherboard drivers are all updated as
well.
Thanks,
Aaron

Was this a clean install of Win2K or an upgrade?
Its often the case that a clean install causes less problems

Yes, it was a clean install. Partitioned the drive, formatted and reinstalled
from scratch. I had Win98 before but wiped all that out completely rather
than an upgrade.
