" I am trying to connect with a friend in another state, for the sole purpose
of playing an old computer game. Years ago, we'd use hyperterminal to
connect, and play our game through it's lan mode. But, seeing as how
hyperterminal is phone only, it's not a good long distance option. We both
have high speed connections, and I'm trying to figure out a way to connect
and play. We messed around with the communications options in Win XP, but
neither one of us was able to make a connection. Any suggestions?"

Would depend on the came I think.
Many games have a online mode.
You may have to download extra software (depends on game again)

Or if its just system to system then you would need yours and friends ip
number.

Open up a Dos box and type IPCONFIG.
As I said most of this depends on the game.
What game are you trying to play?

Not sure what kind of game you mean to play (e.g. a game involving alternate
moves, or a game requiring simultaneous control of opposing assets), but
here is something you might try.

Windows XP Inside Out says that "either person can control the shared
program" using the Application Sharing feature in Windows Messenger, and
that it can be used "to alternate moves in a game".

For anybody else reading who might be struggling to punch Win Messenger
through their firewall, this is the same feature carried over from the
NetMeeting application (conf.exe)
