Digital Image Pro 10 Won't Recognize CD/DVD Drive

My DIP10 won't recognize my CD/DVD drive for copying pictures from the
library. It works on my notebook computer but not my desktop. I've been
trying to get an answer from Microsoft for days. There reply was pretty bad,
I sent them a reply to it, and haven't received help. Any assistance would be
appreciated.

=====================================
More details of the issue would be helpful in
discovering a solution...but maybe you need
to copy the Pictures.pod database on the
computer that archived the files and paste it
in the appropriate folder on the second computer.

Maybe the following info will be useful:

========================================
========================================
How to find the Database for MS Digital Image Library.
========================================
If you have lots of images cataloged, it would be a
good idea to backup the "Pictures.pod" file on a CD...

Each user's database is located in their Application
Data directory (typically C:\Documents and Settings\
<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\POD). The
database is named Pictures.pod by default (though
if a database corruption has occurred, then we will
create new files with incremented names in that same
location).

The user's Application Data directory is a hidden
directory, so users will have to turn on "show hidden
files" in order to see the directory in Explorer. The
actual location of the directory is also stored by the
system in the %APPDATA% environment variable,
so you can get to the folder by going to Start/Run and
typing:

"%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Pod" (without the quotes)

If you used other software to copy to CD, like Roxio or Nero, it is quite
possible that they have taken over this copying function from XP and DIP10
cannot use the drive.
Try the following: right click on Properties and click on the Recording tab.
See if the box "Enable...." is checked. If not, do so and try copying again.

Please be patient with me as I ask a dumb question or two. I am slightly
learning disabled and not real sharp at computer stuff. Where am I supposed
to be when I right click on properies and click on the recording tab? I have
tried from a few places unsuccessfully, thank you very much

I checked as you suggested and it is enabled. ANy other suggestions would be
appreciated. Thanks again. Dorothy Bowelman

I just bought the program and installed it
I was in the library and selected a few pictures to copy to a cd using the
archive process
It only showed my floppy drive as the place the picture could be copied to
instead of my D drive where i make cd copies
Microsoft told me to do the followin (see below) which didn't work. I
responded back to them 2 days ago & haven't heard anymore, yet, thanks for
any help you may be. When i responde i did tell them it works on laptop
computer so i am sure the program is fine

MICROSOFT SUPPORT RESPONSE

Let's first try to see if the archive feature works properly in the Library.
Please refer to the following steps to test if we can archive pictures to the
local hard disc in Safe Mode. I have listed the steps below:

Safe Mode
=============
- Restart your computer.
- When the computer completes the "Power on Self-Test" (usually this appears
as
a black screen with scrolling text commands), hold down the F8 key until you
see
the Windows Startup menu.
- On the Windows Startup menu, select Safe Mode (use the arrow pad on your
keyboard), and then press ENTER.

The screen resolution is poor in Windows Safe Mode and there will be labels at
the corners of the screen indicating the system is in Safe Mode.

Archive to local hard disc
==============
1. Start the Library.
2. Select some pictures in the Library.
NOTE: I suggest we try to archive some other pictures this time to check if
the
issue is file-related.
3. Click the Archive button on the tool bar. Click Next.
4. Select the "Pictures selected when you entered the Archive Pictures Wizard"
Option.
Click Next.
5. Click the Browse button. Click Desktop. Click O.K.
6. Click Next.
7. Click Next.

Can you archive the pictures to the local hard disc in Safe Mode?

If not, this problem may be related to the corruption of the Library. If
this is
the issue, I will provide the steps to completely reinstall Digital Image
Library 9.0 to resolve this issue. Otherwise, most likely the issue is due to
incompatibility between the Library and the CD burner.

Please keep in touch and let me know the progress. If anything is unclear in
my
reply, please feel free to let me know. I am standing by your response.

This is a friendly site. No dumb questions here!
It looks like XP does see your CD drive properly.
Check something for me, to see if XP will copy photos to a CD when you try
the simple copy method.
Open My Computer and a folder with photo file.
Click on one photo file to highlight the file in blue.
Look at the menu on the left of the file names.
You should see Picture Tasks at the top.
The last item under Picture Tasks should be "Copy to CD".
Do you see this item listed there?

tried what Microsoft suggested below & it didn't work. They also suggest
the library file might be corrupt but i tried it on my laptop & it worked
fine. When I try to copy picture(s) to my CD from the library/archive it
only shows my floppy a as an option. I don 't see a way to change it to the d
-drive & they didn't offer a way for me to do it. ANy help would be
appreciated. Thanks again

WHen I try and archive/copy to a cd from the library the only option it shows
is my floppy a drive. I don't see a way to change to d for cd and microsoft
support didnt suggest a way.

By all indications your drive is working fine with XP.
Go back to DIP10 library, select one photo and click on Archive. The wizard
starts, then you get to the Destination window to select your CD drive. It
is not listed. There is a Browse button in this window. Click on it to
browse. A window will open. My Computer will be listed there. Double click
on it to open it. Your CD drive should be on the opening list. Select it.
Does this bring it as an item in the destination window?

You must have a blank CD in the CD drive before you click on Archive in my
previous post.

OK...I thought you were trying to access
files on a CD/DVD that you archived on
your other computer.

Long shot...but maybe the following articles

I tried your latest suggestion and it still didnt recognize the D (CD Drive)
got a message saying "Microsoft cannot write to this location. The location
may be write protected or the device may not be supported. Select another
location or see help for troubleshooting tips. Didn't work :( Below is my
latest advice from Microsoft which I guess I will try. Doubt it will help
because the software works great on my notebook computer. Thanks again for
your help.

Looks like Microsoft is really responding to you this time.

Microsoft's recommendations haven't worked. I emailed HP as Microsoft
recommended. Their recommendation didn't work because the D drive still
isn't recognized . So now I have tried everything and basically Microsoft is
suggesting it is the hardware and HP is saying it is the software. Why
doesn't that surprise me. I am east of a rock and west of a hard place at
this point in time. Any other assistance would be appreciated. Thanks Dorothy

Dear Dorothy,

Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.

I see that you are experiencing an issue while you are trying to install
Microsoft Digital Image Suite 10 Software which is unable to recognize
CD drive.

As the drive is working fine without the Microsoft Digital Image Suite
10 Software, there is no issue with the drive. At this point, I suggest
you use different media and try reducing the burn speed to 4X.

You can follow the steps below to reduce the burn speed:

1. Open My Computer.
2. Right click CD drive and select properties.
3. Under Recording tab, select "enable CD recording on the drive"
option.
4. Select 4x as write speed.
5. Click Ok.

If the issue persist, this is related to a piece of software that is out
of scope of the HP warranty. If you need further assistance with your
third party hardware or software, please contact the manufacturer at
(number or Web site of the manufacturer).

NOTE: You may also want to consult the help files or user guide
for your third party product.

If you have further questions, please reply to this message and we will
be happy to help you.

Please visit our Owner Services Web site for details on keeping your HP
and Compaq products up and running.

===========================
Excellent! Thanks for the update.

FWIW, as a general rule...all programs "especially"
virus scanners should be closed when installing any
new software. This is addressed my list of General
Suggestions for successfully running Picture It! /
Digital Image. I should have posted it for you in the
first place but you still may find it to be useful:

===================================

I can offer you some *general* suggestions that
help me to run several versions of Picture It! /
Digital Image on my old PIII 500, Win XP Home,
SP2...(fully updated from Windows Update site):

Before installing Picture It! / Digital Image all
programs should be shut down...especially virus
scanners. If you have an HP Office Jet...disable
it also. (this is discussed in a readme file on
disk one)

It has been reported that Norton GoBack
4.0 may not be fully compatible with DIP9 or
DIP10. This could be an issue with WinXP
SP2. It can cause the error BAD_POOL_
HEADER and may cause a blue screen
crash when you attempt save. The current
solution is to Uninstall Norton GoBack 4.0.
Norton GoBack 4.0 is included in Norton
SystemWorks 5.

If you happen to have Adobe PhotoShop or
Elements installed...right click on a .jpg file
and choose Properties. Click the Photoshop
Image tab and uncheck the "Generate Thumbnails"
button, then click OK.

If you are running Norton AntiVirus 2004...add the
following files to the Auto-Scan Exclusion list:
Users of PI / DIP7.0...add piorg7.db
Users of PI / DIP9 or DIP10...add piorg.db

Also...the following software has been reported
to be incompatible with various Picture It! products.

Replay TV Software
Veritas Netbackup Professional backup
eFax Messenger Plus

AdsGone Popup Killer...can prevent your helpful
movies from working. Disable it before opening
Picture It! / Digital Image.

It has also been reported that being on a network
can cause Picture It! to be slow.

Make certain that your Video, Printer and
Scanner drivers are the most current available.
Check the manufacturer's websites for updated
drivers.

It may be worth a try to reduce your Graphics
Hardware Acceleration as per the instructions
in the following KB article:

(272193) PI: How to Troubleshoot
Graphics Issues
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=272193
If this improves the situation, it is a strong
indicator that you need to update your video
driver.

Before opening Picture It...close all programs
running in the background...*especially* virus
scanners.

Run Disk Cleanup (all options), Error-Checking/
ScanDisk and Defrag regularly. (make sure
all your Temp and Temporary Internet files
are deleted).

(310312) Description of the Disk Cleanup
Tool in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310312

(315265) How to Perform Disk Error Checking
in Windows XP

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314848

(305781) HOW TO: Analyze and Defragment
a Disk in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=305781

If you are using the 2002 (or earlier) version
of Picture It, and have lots of images saved
in My Documents / My Pictures...it can help
to move them to a different location.

It also may help if you choose "Icon List"
instead of "Thumbnails" on your folder view
when you go to...File / Open. (this setting
will be reflected on your "Save As" screen also)

Having a hard drive that is 50% free doesn't
hurt either.

Running WinXP Home, I found that increasing
my paging file was beneficial...the following
article explains how to do it:

(308417) HOW TO: Set Performance
Options in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308417

One last suggestion...open fewer images
and save often.
