Digital Camera plugin

I recently purchased a digital camera and when I plug it in the USB and turn
on the camera I do not get a box asking me what I want to do with the
pictures. I have seen other XP users just plug in their camera's and save all
pictures to their to the folders they wanted because of this box. Can anyone
help?

Pete, with your camera turned on and the USB cable connected boot your
computer. The computer should recognize your camera storage as a 'device'. IF
that occurs (Plug and Play) you can drag and drop the files to anywhere or
you may cut and past them anywhere you like. Mike

Look up in the istructions for your camera to see if it has a usb option to
turn on,this is usually in the set up of the camera

I have tried to reboot. It can see the device and I can only save the
pictures one at a time. Very time consuming.

I can't answer the camera question, but I'm going to give you a better
(I think) workaround. Use a usb card reader instead. You can buy a card
reader for very little, around $25-30usd. I wouldn't get a no-name
brand just to save a few dollars. Attach the card reader to your
computer and when you want to work with your pictures, just put the
memory card in. XP will see the reader as a removable drive and you can
copy the picture files to wherever you want, just like you do with any
other drive. I do suggest that you not *move* the pictures (and this
goes for other non-camera files, too) but rather *copy* them and then
delete them from the memory card. That is one extra step, but that way
if there is a "slip", you won't lose your pictures.

Another nice advantage of using a card reader is that you can share your
pictures with family and friends on their computers without having to
install any camera software. For ex., I have a card reader with 5
different-sized slots which I took with me on vacation. I could easily
transfer pictures from my camera's memory card to my brother's laptop
and vice versa.

That was fun wasn't it. I do have a Digital camera, and it dose
automatically download the picture and put them into a preconfigured
folder according, in my case to the date downloaded and the folder
within the camera. All quite nice, and all well explained in the
on-line help files that came with the software that had to be
installed on my laptop to accomplish this. I also had to configure
this software to do the fancy store thing. All that only took me about
two days, but because of a default configuration which deletes the
files from the camera after transfer, the side effect was that I got
lots of practice taking pictures with the camera.
Now to make a short story long, each camera manufacturer has a
different idea of what is the best way to handle your idea of what
Plug and Play should be. So if you read the documentation that came
with your camera you are likely to find, as I did, that it would be
better if the manufacturers spent more time telling you what their
software package will do than telling what your camera could do if you
didn't get so discouraged trying to get it to work.
