dial-up modem home network

Okay, forgive me if this message is redundant i'm not sure
the other one worked.

Hi, recently i was at a friend's house and i saw that he
and his dad had their computers networked through their
regular 56k dial-up modems using normal phone cord. i was
not aware up until that time that that was possible. Now i
would like to see if i could do the same. I have to
computers running windows XP, and both have functioninmg
56k dial-up modems on them. I also have 50 ft. of phone
cord :) If you can help it would really be appreciated.

Best thing would be to ask how your friends did that exactly. Are you sure
they don't have two phone lines and one modem dials the other modem?I know
you can use crossover cable and connect two NICs directly, but not sure if
you can hook up modems directly to each other.

Another possibility is that they have Home Phoneline (HPNA) networking
adapters on both computers.

I currently have two home PCs running Windows XP
configured with Diamond Multimedia HomeFree Phoneline
networking. It provides a way to use home phoneline as
network interconnect. Limitation is 10 Mbps on data xfer
but system is very reliable and allows sharing of
printers, files and internet connection. There are some
nuances which can be worked out with experience. Also,
cost is very minimal considering only two PCI cards are
required. Be careful not to purchase any "combo" desk
kits having PCI/ISA card pair. These will not fit in most
generic PC housings. Suggest reviewing Home PNA website
at http://www.homepna.org/about_tech/. Good luck
