Dial-Up Connection Box Showing, But on DSL, Did Not Used to Do Thi

These past few weeks or so this computer has begun to do a strange thing:
when I reach a Web site that does not exist or certain Web sites that do
exist (but I don't know why these particluar Web sites are pegged for this),
the Dial-Up Connection box comes up asking me to connect to a dial-up
connection. However, I am on DSL and my DSL connection is never lost. I
keep setting the settings to the "Never Ask" (or whatever) option and click
both Apply and then Okay, but the setting never saves as the next time the
box comes up it is still on the middle option. (When you select the "Never
Ask" one you cannot save it as a Default setting.)

When I push Okay on the Dial-Up box the browser goes to Offline state so
when I type in a new URL or click on a link then I get the box asking if I
want to stay Working Offline or not.

This isn't creating a problem for the computer, but it is thoroughly
annoying to me as it happens at least several times a day.

It suddenly started happening one night and has not ceased since then. I
have no idea why it suddenly began doing this.

I have searched the archives of this group and found somewhat similar
problems from folks but did not find any working solutions.

Please help!

Thanks!
