Dial Up Conection

When i start a internet dial up conection, i get the tray bar icon
where i can see the information send and recived in bytes. But, even
if there is no aplication using the conection (and i made sure this
was the case by blocking the pc with a firewall) still sometimes the
status indicates some bytes being transfered.
I need to know if this is actually data sent to the network or just
the SO cheking the Modem.
This is beacuse i am using a GPRS modem and the provider charges by
data transfered instead of time of connection.

You need to that XP (any version) now "phones" home to check for
"vaild" license info and updates. If you are using the XP "built-in"
firewall software, then Microsoft may have made "hidden" by-pass
"rules" so as to always connect to teir servers.

I thougt the same thing, so i used Sunbelt personal Firewall instead.
Besides, the data trasfered is really low, just a couple bytes every
few minutes, but during a long connection these add up.
