Dial up active constantly

Running XP home on a relatively new laptop. Noticed just today that there is
constant network activity indicated on the network icon in the task tray.

This is something I have never seen. It is running full tilt even when no
programs that I know of are accessing the internet.

I was using the built in firewall in XP. Since this started turned it off
and downloaded Zone Alarm.

What appears to be running is Generic Host Services for Win32 svchost.exe.

Is this a problem? No problem is indicate by ZA or Norton AV.

Hi, Jim. I had the same problem. I just told ZoneAlarm to block it and haven't been bothered since.

Should have added that coincendentally I installed cumulative security
update for IE 6.0 SP 1 as a critical update on 7/30/04. Could this be
related?

When I told it to block Generic Host it does not allow me to access any web
page. The problem seems to be that it will prompt you for this more than
once back to back even though only one app is running or one web page is
running.
