DHCP Client

I have 3 computers at home, SONY laptop running win98
2nd, HP 7940 running XP Professional that I upgraded, and
new HP a250n running XP Home. I have Road Runner and I
don't have them networked to each other. I have a Toshiba
Modem from Road Runner and a Linksys Router. I can access
internet on the laptop and the HP a250n. The HP 7940 has
suddenly stopped connecting. I had a problem starting on
Aug 21 that I could connect to the internet, but email
couldn't connect. Microsoft helped me with that, we think
it is a McAfee problem. After that I could get email and
connect to the internet. Then starting on 9/3 I couldn't
connect to the internet. The RR tech had me check the
DHCP Client in services, and although it is set on
atumatic it won't start. Getting message: Could not start
the DHCP Client Service on Local Computer. Error 1068 The
dependency service or group filed to start. Can anyone
help? i did a system restore to a prior time and it
didn't fix the problem.

I am having some of the same problems as I also have Road
Runner and a Linksys Router. I am using Norton however,
so maybe it is not a McAfee problem. I know this sounds
simple, but when you are having these problems, unplug
the router and plug it back in to reset it. So far, that
has helped me. Also make sure you are set to
automatically detect TCP/IP. If you still have problems,
disconnect the computer with the problem from the router
and connect it directly to the modem. Reset the computer
and modem and see if you can access the Intenet and
email. If you can, then shut down, plug the computer
back into the router, router into the modem and reboot
everything. Sometimes this works. I think you are
having a Linksys problem because I am trying to figure
out the same issues and have different antivirus
programs. I contacted Linksys and they referred me to
http://wown1.com for help. There are some good articles
there, maybe one will help you.

I also have a similar situation.

I have found the Linksys is dropping the WAN ip
information. Log in to the router and select the Status
tab. If the WAN information is not completed press the
DHCP Renew button. If you have turned off the ICS
(Internet Connection Sharing) in Windows XP you will have
your connection restored without shutting down all
computers and hardware on the network.

This situation seems to be a conflict with Windows XP
installing the ICS by default.

I have also update the router firmware to 1.45.6.

I have a very similar setup with the toshiba modem and
Linksys router. I have also had the problem where I can
connect to the internet, but cannot get email from the
RoadRunner server. I still have not solved the problem.
Could you elaborate a little on what Microsoft told you
to solve that issue? Much appreciated!

When Microsoft called, they had me go into msconfig and
under services uncheck all of the McAfee applications,
then into the startup menu and uncheck all of the McAfee
applications there. She said that both locations had to
be disabled, not just in startup. (Privacy Service, Virus
Scan Online and Firewall - which the RR tech said was
probably a waste of money because the Router hardware
firewall is better than the software firewall. Anyway
after doing all of that and rebooting, I was able to get
my email, so she said that indicated that all of the
Windows updates were ok and the problem was one of the
McAfee applications.

BTW I found an answer in one of the help forums that in
XP you should not use msconfig to make these changes,
that should do it through control apnel, admin services,
etc. which is what the RR tech had me do to try to turn
my DHCP client back on. Hope this helps you, I just
returned from working today so haven't had a chance to
try any of the suggestions. Thanks everyone, will let you
know how I make out.

Thanks - I did disable the McAfee programs and was
immediately able to send/receive email again. I then
contacted McAfee to find out why. They told me that the
latest version of Virus Scan has a new feature called
Worm Stopper that can interfere with email in WXP. You
need to disable Worm Stopper and terminate the
process "MCVSESCN.exe", then you can run the rest of
McAfee. Here's the McAfee instruction page:

Hi Benjamin,
Sorry to have to ask, but how do you log on to the
router? I can't find it as a device on the hardware
lists.

Marv,
Thanks for the info, you got further than I did - just
have had time.
