Device Cannot Start [code 10] on netgear wifi adapter

A posting was made on this topic back in November, picked up on a search by
Google but not displayed in my OE ... oh well!!

I have just purchased a Netgear WG121 USB 54Mbs adapter and get the subject
message when trying to install. However, here's the twist .... it installs
ok when I am on my dial up line to my ISP!! Which somewhat defeats the
object as I want to connect to a broadband router, but why have to dial up
to get the b***y thing recognised.

I'm running winxp, SP1 and with the Hotfix Q815485 removed as recommended
in the installation instructions, but in all truthfulness it seems like a
driver problem. But then it must have worked for someone, otherwise it
would not have been released ... or would it?

Can anybody help?

Thanks,
Colin

Where does it say to remove the hotfix? I just installed one without
reading the instructions and it went well. After reading your message
I looked at the instructions and see nothing about removing the
hotfix. I was not online at the time.

I will see if it connects tomorrow as the hotspot is in town and I'm
not.

Did you go to Netgear to see if there is an updated driver?

Very strange. Never heard of such dependency.....
Have you checked for viruses or spyware recently?

Yes ... it's the same as issued on the CD ... Version 2

With it only working when dial up is active it does seem as though it
depends on a service running initiated by dial up.

Thanks for your interest

Version: 6.0.592 / Virus Database: 375 - Release Date: 18/02/200

There is a fix for this problem (another"hole"in Windows),but I can not locate the file to download.I have the same prolem with nvidia graphics card.I copy Microsoft article below. If you manage to find this fix,let me know, please. My computer is not working at all.Microsoft forgot to add the link

View products that this article applies to.
SYMPTOM
When you insert a multifunction PC Card into the PCMCIA slot, only one function is enumerated and initialized, the other functions do not work. When this problem occurs, a code 10 error occurs in Device Manager. This problem occurs in certain scenarios, and it depends on how the function drivers connect to the interrupt request (IRQ). If the drivers use the translated resources (as expected), they connect to an IRQ as "exclusive." This means that the drivers shut out the other function. However, if the drivers explicitly specify "shared," this problem does not occur. Some drivers may incorrectly specify "shared."
CAUS
This problem occurs because when Mf.sys generates resource lists, it does not handle the allocation of device exclusive resources when more than one child device requests a resource that is marked device exclusive on the parent device. Interrupt resource on a multifunction PC Card is an example of a resource that is marked device exclusive on the parent device that must be shared on more than one child device. When a child device requests a device exclusive resource, it does not receive one, and a code 10 error occurs in Device Manager.

I just returned mine. No joy. I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 and none
of the low end cards or USB wireless products would work. I got a
YDI Diamond card. Works flawlessly. It's a PC card in a USB adapter.
Card can be removed and used in the PCMCIA slot.

I be happy now.

Done some further work in trying to get to the bottom of this.

I dual boot windows 2000 and xp, so I tried in W2K and it worked perfectly,
so I don't suspect a hardware problem.

I next went to a friend's house and tried it on his XP system and it worked
perfectly, which is quite annoying as I built it for him!!

So I came back, formatted the partition and reloaded XP ... and got exactly
the same problem, with no patches/fixes and nothing else running. On the
inital driver installation it produces the dial up dialogue. If I cancel
and continue with the driver installation then it fails, whilst if I let it
connect all goes well and it works.

I can unplug and replug as often as I like with the call connected and it
continues to work with the line dropped, but then when I unplug and plug
back in its back ot the usual failure.

If I had got the driver off of a dubious website I would have said that it
had spyware in it (I have run my virus checker, ad-aware and spybot just in
case).

Can anybody shed any light on whats going on?

Thanks,
Colin

Well, it just can be... Not all computers are born equal...
Some USB controllers are nastier than others.
Also , have you checked the eventlog? when driver fails with this error,
usually it leaves an informative message there.
