Desperate! - MSHOME not accessible and Network path not found

A

akb195

Hi,

Here is my home network cfg:

Windows XP Home desktop <--> Home Router <--> Windows XP
Pro laptop

On the desktop everytime I open My Network Places->Entire
Network->Microsoft Windows Network, I see Mshome.
However when I click on Mshome I always get the error:
"Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission
to use this network resource. Contact the administrator
of this server to find out if you have access
permissions. The network path was not found."

The desktop has a fresh reinstall of Windows XP Home on
my. I searched the web and followed all instructions:
- disabling ICS
- enabing NetBIOS over TCP/IP
I am still failing to get my desktop to work.

I can ping each machine from the other.
I can access the XP Home desktop's shared folder from the
Pro machine.
On the desktop if I run Start->Run->\\//mydesktopname - I
can see the shared folders. But if on the desktop I do
the the same for the laptop, I get an error: "The network
path was not found".

I am still confused whether the problem is local to the
XP Home desktop or if there is some setting on the XP Pro
laptop - I doubt that however.

PLEASE HELP ME - I performed the reinstall precisely for
this prolem.

Thanks,

would also appreciate a brief reply here in the newsgroup just
so I can see that you have actually read this message.

Hi Hans-Georg,

I am in the process of trying the suggestions in the
website you sent out. Thanks for your help.

I know that there is some issue regardin the OS's network
browser service as I looked at the Event logs for the
System and, depending on the order of reboots, I get
partial success. Let me investigate further and I shall
post any findings.

Thanks,

Hi Hans-Georg,

I followed all instructions at your website but I am
still not successful.

I made sure I logged on and off with a password; I have
Simple File Sharing enabled on the XP Pro laptop; the
network Guest user account is active on both machines.

BTW the XP Pro machine is a laptop my wife uses at school
and home - both locations employ wireless. The desktop is
connected to the wireless router using a wired port.

Depending on order of reboots, I can get partial success:
either
1. the desktop XP Home can see the MSHOME network but
never access anything on the Pro machine;
OR
2. the desktop XP Home machine cannot even access the
MSHOME network.
In both cases the XP Pro machine can access the desktop's
shared folder.

I am quite certain this has something to do with the
Computer browsers on the two machines. Here are two
entries from my System Event log in chronological order:

1 (WARNING): The browser was unable to retrieve a list of
servers from the browser master \\XPPRO-LAPTOP on the
network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{395612BF-B7F2-481A-98FF-
A2E9B7576D83}. The data is the error code.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

2 (ERROR): The browser service has failed to retrieve the
backup list too many times on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{395612BF-B7F2-481A-98FF-
A2E9B7576D83}. The backup browser is stopping.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I am stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much,

Would you know how I can disable autologon in XP Home? I
tried using Control Panel but I cannot find the option
anywhere.

Alok,

a quick way is to enter the command:

control userpasswords2

either in a command line window or in the run command. You will
see the checkbox at the top of the dialog.

Alok,

the computer browser is one area about which I don't know much.
Please chime in, anybody, if you know more about computer
browser problems.

Sometimes it seems to help to disable the computer browser
service on machines that cause problems, but obviously this is
not a good solution when you do that on more than one computer,
because then you wouldn't have any computer browser when only
these computers are running.

Is your network at least functioning properly when you don't
rely on the browser but instead access the other computers
directly by name? For example, you could enter the name of the
other computer, preceded with two backslashes, directly into the
Windows Explorer address line on top. Example:

\\XPPRO-LAPTOP

Does that work? It would be one step in testing and also a
temporary workaround.
