Desktop tab in Display

For some reason the desktop tab in the display dialog has disapeared. Does
anyone know why that would happen and how to get it back?
I've tried the show desktop icon. No result. I also can no longer see any
of the icons on the desktop and can only get colors for the background.

I've been experiencing what sounds like a related problem. When I open
display properties, I can see the Desktop tab, but when I click the tab, it
disappears. Also (but unknown if related), I cannot see any theme previews.

I've looked at all the registry tweeks that are suggested, but for some
reason, none of those keys exist. I have the key all the way down to
Policies, but the only one listed there is Explorer and within
that...NoDriveTypeAutoRun.

Any suggestions for getting back my desktop tab??

You can always use "Windows-key+D" which does exactly the same!
