desktop shortcut not working

Guest

when I create a shortcut to a "www." address, windows(XP SP2) does not
"remember" the file association and asks what programme to use. When I go
into windows explorer|tools|folder options|File types| to set the association
I have a list of of about 23 files type with URL-........... Protocol with an
extention of (NONE).
Only the NEW and ADVANCED buttons are available. If I go into
ADVANCED|OPEN|EDIT, then following is displayed,
Application used.. ->"D:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"
-nohome %1
Use DDE is checked
DDE Message ->"%1",,-1,0,,,,
Application -> IExplore
DDE Application not running is blank
Topic -> WWW_OpenURL

This is exactly the same as the options for the registered file type of
Internet shortcut, extensions URL

So in short, none of the internet shortcuts work. I have tried to reregister
the dll's but it makes no difference.

Any ideas or help

thanks in advance

Hi Bob,

Which DLLs? Try this command from Start/Run:

regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll

(The "/i" parameter is required in this case).

If nothing helps, and if your Service Pack level is SP1 or above, use the
you may use the Set Program Access and Defaults feature to set your default
browser. To set Internet Explorer as the default (this repairs the file
association settings as well), try this:

From Control Panel, open Add/Remove Programs applet, and choose Set Program
Access and Defaults button. ( Alternately, click Start, Run and type control
appwiz.cpl,,3 ). Click the Custom button once. From the list that appears,
select Internet Explorer and then click the OK button.
