Desktop search does not index all folders!!

Windows desktop search does not include all my .DOC files in the index. I've
checked:

--- it is set to index .DOC files (and does index many)
--- it is set to index all of My DOcuments, including the specific folders
with the files in. It seems to leave out whole folders.
--- I've reindexed everything.

I'm running XP. I can't find an "About Windows Search" to tell me what
version of that I'm running, but I have automatic updates so I guess both XP
and Search are bang up to date.

It is mysterious, but so far, this thing is useless!

Any ideas?

Windows Search does not update automatically. Try the manual link instead:

Hi Allan,
Many thanks, I downloaded the latest version but still the same.
Don't you have to wait several days for it to build the index? I don't have
much experience with Windows Search since I have never installed it.

It turns out the answer is the FANCI bit, which is the flag you set within
Windows explorer to say "allow fast indexing on this directory." There is no
mention whatever of this within the WDS documentation - thank you Microsoft -
but it over-rides what WDS is set to search.
