Desktop Icons

Ok, Recently I have had to restore my drive back to a
factory new condition running XP home OS. Before I did
this I had my desktop customized where I had loaded a
picture and the Desktop icons did not have that little
rectangle under them with that default blue color on it.
I could see the desktop icon and the letters below were a
bold white lettering with a shadow behind them. Beyond
that was the desktop picture I loaded. Now I have that
little blue rectangle and I can not remember how I had
made it transparent. Can anyone help?
