the icons that are on my desktop take on the default color of the
background that is chosen regardless of what picture that I have
displaying.

The last time I installed XP ( using xp pro now ) the background for
the icon descriptions were transparent.

how do I get it to display that agian?

thanx

Open the System applet in Control Panel, choose the Advanced tab, and
click Settings in the Performance section. Turn on the "Use drop
shadows for icon labels on the desktop option", and click OK.

already had that checked on initial set up.

In fact, that option and the last option in that list are the only
things checked.

Try checking them all and then take them off one at a time.

Right click on the desktop, Select Arrange Icons By and make sure "Lock
Wev Items on Desktop" is not enabled.

Hi Michael,

Start/Control Panel/System/Advanced/Performance/Settings/ Visual
Effects/"Use drop shadows for icon labels on the Desktop"

Also:

Right click the desktop and select Arrange Icons by. Towards the bottom of
that list, uncheck "Lock web items on the desktop."
