Desktop ICONS

Hi,

I have a small problem with my DELL pc running XP home. The description of
each desktop ICON is shrouded in a white square instead of just being text.
I have read somewhere in one of these newsrooms its just a setting, but
after 3 hours of searching I have thrown in the towel and decided to ask.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi, Brian:

Read this KB article:

Desktop icons and icon labels may not display background transparency or the
drop shadow effect in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305117/en-us

In addition, right-click any blank area of your desktop, select Arrange
Icons By and make sure that 'Lock Web Items on Desktop' option is
*unchecked*.

Control Panel, System, Advanced, Performance, Settings, Visual Effects,
scroll down, check "Use drop shadows .........." OK your way out.

Gents,

Thanks for your input but unfortunately my problem persists despite carrying
out the three functions suggested below.

Any more suggestions?

This is obviously not affecting performance or anything else, its just an
annoyance I would like to get rid of.

Believe or not, my 'drop shadow' method works backwards. In other words, I
must enable (check) drop shadows to get them to turn off.

Thats what Woody said in his post. To get the transparent labels you
have to Enable drop shadows for icons.
