Desktop icons very slow to refresh

My previous PC had Windows 98, 355 MHz, 32 MB RAM. When the desktop was
displayed, after minimising applications, all icons refreshed simultaneously.

Now that I have Win XP, 2.5 GHz, 256 MB RAM, icons take several seconds to
refresh after displaying the desktop.

Can anyone advise?

Check and see what you have running at Startup. You can use the msconfig
program (Start>Run msconfig [enter]) just as you did in Win98. Here are
