Desktop gone missing

XP Pro - a couple of nights ago my partner was
downloading critical updates (9 gb worth). Got the time
to reboot msg & clicked OK. Since then, upon startup her
desktop appears normal for about 15 seconds - then
everything but the wallpaper leaves & a small explorer
window opens. This becomes the sole means of dealing
with the computer. Shut-down is through task mgr. The
desktop responds to neither right nor left click. Any
help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

Greetings.

You stated that you shut down the machine through task manager. When all
disappears, go to task manager and click on the Processes tab. Is
Explorer.exe running? If not, the while in task manager, click File --> New
Task (run). Type in explorer.exe and click OK. Does this at least bring
your desktop(icons et al.) back?

Open task mgr,new task,type:cmd In cmd type:Sfc /Scannow
When the graph starts, install xp cd,exit the info page,When its thru,
type:CHKDSK C: /F Then type:EXIT Restart computer,remove cd.
Run the DOS window in Min.,sometimes the graph runs behind it.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Yes explorer.exe
appears under running processes in task mgr. In fact
it's window is the only thing that appears on the desktop.

Have you tried booting into safe mode?
