Demote / rename

I'm betting regular posters are tired of this question,
but I'm going to risk the hazing and ask it anyway.

I've found that you cannot rename a Domain Controller in
Windows 2000 server. Can you demote the the server,
rename it, and then promote it again later?

I am coming in late to a migration project where the
previous person setup our new server as the PDC and used
the same name as our old PDC. Eventually the new machine
will need to use the old name and be the domain
controller, but right now I them both online.

You are correct. Demote (dcpromo) the DC, rename, then
promote (dcpromo) it.

You might consider that during dcpromo to remove AD you will also loose all
user/domain info. You should have a second DC available to hold your domain
info.

The original PDC is holding all the domain info. The new
PDC, the one I demoted, was vacant.
