can't demote

Neil Jarman

Hi,

I have created a new domain, in 2003 on a new server, called xyz.com.

My old server was the only server in the old domain, xyz.co.uk.

I have sucessfully moved everthing I want from the old server, and intend to
use it to host stuff like our virus server, and SQL server now.

I want to demote the old server down to get rid of the old AD.

When I run dcpromo, it says that it is not the last DC in the domain - but
it was the only one is the old domain!

As a consequece, I can't demote - it wan't let me.

Any help or advice greatfully appreciated!

When you go into ADUC and look in the Domain Controllers container what
shows in there?

Sounds like the two domains atleast have the same NETBIOS names. How
did you move (migrate) your AD from xyz.co.uk to xyz.com? Did you add
the new DC to your existing domain? If not you can use DCPROMO
/ForceRemoval to demote it. IF it actually is part of the new domain,
you can still use the /forceremoval switch. However, you will need to
follow Q216498 to remove it from the new domain after the force removal.

Hi Doug,

I didn't migrate - I made the decision to make a new AD, got a slave to
enter them all. Used exmerge to deal with the mail, and all things
considered, I was pleased with the lack of problems.

The do have the same netbios name - possibly a mistake!

If I use the /forceremoval switch, will there be any other implications?

Hi Scott,

Good point - there is a test server (no longer alive) showing in there.

Presumably I can remove this?
