Deleting MRU Files

G

Guest

I've recently become aware of my "MRU" files. I understand what they are. I
don't know what good they do. And I don't know if they cause any problems.

I would like to know if it's wise to leave them alone or if I should delete
them, and why.

Thanks,
Milt

Typically there are no problems with leaving them alone, and no particular
reason to delete them. They are just lists of the most recently used items.
There are several of these lists. Why are you worried about them?

Anando,

I understand what MRU files are. But I don't know why I need them or what
they do. Specifically, I'm looking at them because I have a problem. I
accidentally added a Norton Ghost program, "v2iMountSvc", to my "Open With"
list. That was a mistake and I want to remove it. I thought I eliminated it
from the "Open With" list yesterday by removing it from my registry in
HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts.

But today it returned! And I'm wondering if perhaps it may be generated from
an MRU file.

Thanks for your interest,

Anando,

Thanks for the answer. To be sure I understand you, are you saying if I
uninstall Ghost it will remove the entry that I accidently added to the "Open
With" list?

Milt,

Not from a MRU file, but from file associations itself.

Without knowing the full details about how you added Norton Ghost to Open with listing (and for which file type?):

You can prevent a program from being displayed in the open-with menu and in the open-with dialog by adding a "NoOpenWith" registry value for that application. More details available at this URL:

Arbitrary File Types:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d.../fileassociations/fa_arbitrary_file_types.asp

NoOpenWith. If a registry string with this value is present, this application is excluded from the Open With dialog box list. This value has no data associated with it.

Anando,

Yes, I addeded "v2iMountSvc" manually by going to "v2iMountSvc.exe" in the
Ghost program folder. That's why I didn't try to remove it by uninstalling
the Ghost program. The only way I can think of to remove it from the "Open
With" list is to find it in the registry. I've tried the "Find" utility in
regedit, but haven't been able to locate it.

Ramesh,

I added "v2iMountSvc" to the "Open With" dialog, that is, the list of
program names,
by browsing to the Ghost program using the browse feature of the "Open With"
window. I didn't realize that doing so would also add it to the open with
window.

I was able to delete it from the "Open With" list by removing it from
"FileExts"
in the registry using the instructions on your web site. But that didn't
remove it from
the "Open With" window.

Milt,

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\v2iMountSvc.exe

Backup the branch by exporting to a REG file.

Delete the branch "v2iMountSvc.exe"

Close Regedit.exe

Alternately:
See my note on "NoOpenWith" registry value? That should hide v2iMountSvc from the Open with dialog.

Ramesh,

That's what I was looking for. I backed up and then deleted
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\v2iMountSvc.exe. Problem solved!

And thanks for the reference to the article on "Arbitrary File Types". That
explained
what I needed to know. M/S seems to explain everything; I just have a hard
time
finding the info.
