deleting fonts

how can I delete fonts from the drop menu in Word; I've tried to delete fonts
from the font file on the control menu but they won't delete.

Fonts aren't in Word, they're in Windows. You can go to Start >
Control Panel > Fonts, right-click on a font name, and choose
Uninstall. (I think this deletes the font from the Fonts folder
entirely, so if you want to get it back some day, be sure to keep a
copy somewhere else. When you want it back, right-click on the font
name in your storage location and choose Install.)

Wait .. I don't know what "font file" and "control menu" are -- are
you perhaps on a Mac?

I think she's referring to the Fonts Folder via the Control Panel - in which
case there are some required by the OS that can't be deleted.

There are fonts that you _should not_ delete, but that doesn't mean you _can't_
delete them--just that things won't work right if you do. See
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/DeleteFontsSafely.htm for the list of
fonts that you shouldn't touch.
