Deleting Folders {$NtUninstall#######$}

J

Jisha

I understand from other threads here that it's OK to delete these
{$NtUninstallQ######$}and {$NtUninstallKB######$} folders from the WinNT
folder.

Having 58 of these folders, I plan to move them elsewhere until needed but
would like to verify some things first before deleting them for good.

1)
In Add/Remove programs, I've noticed a few Hotfixes having the same KB# as a
few of these folders.
Are these few particular folders still necessary for uninstalling these
hotfixes?

2)
Since I don't plan to uninstall any of these hotfixes, if I get rid of their
uninstall folders as well, will I be left with a "gummed-up" add/remove
programs - listing hotfixes which are no longer uninstallable?

If so, is there a way to just get rid of the reference to these hotfixes
from the add/remove programs list? ...where is this "list" maintained (or
compiled from)? ...is it simply a matter of deleting a registry item or some
other reference in a folder or file somewhere?

TIA
Chris

The uninstall strings point to the folders in question, this is academia
as you don't intend to uninstall the hotfixes (and you shouldn't unless
they are giving you problems). Usually after a week or so you would
know if a hotfix causes problems. If you have no problems it's
completely safe to remove the folders. The uninstall entries in the
add/remove programs can be removed under this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Like John John said, if you need to uninstall the hot fixes you will
need the files.

"Gummed-up"? Since you don't intend to get rid of the hotfixes, you
don't need to worry. I'd not worry about removing them from add/remove
programs either - at least you can see what you have installed when a
new fix comes along that prereqs the old fix.

Like John John, said just wait a while after installing a fix and
remove the folders when you need space.

Cheers,

Cliff
