Deleted Items Errors

I do NOT have an IMAP account, I have a POP3 account - MS Outlook XP (2003).
I am having the same problem that I see for IMAP users - I get a
strikethrough on a deleted item in the inbox, but it doesn't go to the
deleted items folder nor can I get rid of it out of the inbox! HELP!! I'm
cleaning out my husband's outlook folders and he has over 4000 deleted items
that don't go anywhere!

Is he using Remote mail settings? If so just do a Send and Receive to delete
all the items marked for deletion.

Thanks, Gordon, I tried your suggestion, but it didn't work. I did send and
receive again and got ANOTHER copy of the deleted items instead of getting
rid of the deleted items. (I also recently posted a question today about
duplicate messages.) I do not have IMAP so cannot get the "purge deleted
items" from the edit menu. THis is very frustrating.

What version of Outlook are you using? (In a previous post you said "Outlook
XP(2003)"! Do you have Outlook XP (2002) OR Outlook 2003? (Tip - go to
help-About)

In that case, go to Tools-Send/Recieve, go to the account you are wanting to
delete the headers from, go to the arrow next to the account, and click on
"process marked headers".
That should then delete all the headers that are marked for deletion.

I wish it were that simple. Every attempt to process marked headers returns
the error 0x8004210C - "some messages you marked for download are no longer
available on the server."
If I could figure out which ones are not available I'd stop trying to
download them so I could delete the other ones that ARE available!

How many messages are we talking about? Have you got access to Webmail so
you can actually see which ones are there?

OK, I don't know if I've got access to webmail...finally you've stumped me!
For an example of what I've got, I've created folders in the inbox tree for
each month. February 2005 has 388 items in it that I've been able to move
from inbox. Inbox has over 1000 DELETED messages for February that I CAN'T
move to the February folder because the items are messages for which I can't
move the headers because I can't download the messages!!!! Confused??? Me
too!

Might try this. Create a new folder in your Personal Folders and name it
Junk or anything that you want. Open up the Inbox folder and drag or move
the message headers into the Junk folder. Try it with a few first. Then
Delete that new folder that you created. If it works repeat the steps again
for the rest.Post back

I got so excited...I thought you had the solution! But, alas, I can't move
any of the messages because they have not yet been DOWNLOADED FROM THE
SERVER!!!
AAAAAGGGHHHHHH!!!!

Call your ISP. You could have 1 or a few messages stuck. If that is the case
they can purge your messages
from their server to clean your inbox.

Guess what, guys...
I fixed it myself!!
I took all the messages that COULD be opened, downloaded and/or deleted, and
moved THEM to a new folder. Then, all that was left in the inbox were the
deleted message headers. I went to the send/receive in Tools, and "processed
marked headers" and VOILA!! All the deleted headers disappeared from the
inbox!
Thank you, Peter and Gordon (wow, like I'm in the 60's again!) for all your
suggestions...good thing for my husband I have the patience of a saint...!!
:)

Glad it worked in the end......
