Within the last 2-3 weeks, I have been experiencing some strange slowdowns
in my system. I am at a loss as to what is causing this. I will try to
describe, best I can, the symptons I am seeing.
After my system has been running a few minutes, things like closing windows,
opening documents, spell check in Outlook running, etc, begin to get really
slow. I can close Outlook , or OE, and it takes a few seconds for the icon
on the task bar to go away. I can try to open a word document, and it can
take upwards of minutes to actually open the document. I can try to send an
email in Outlook, once it is composed and I click on send, it can take a
minute or two for the spellcheck to come up, once it is checked and I click
on send, it can take another couple of minutes to actually send it.
When I first boot my system, things are ok, but after just a few minutes of
checking emails, browsing newsgroups, this starts to happen.
When it first started happening, I tried using system restore, and was
successful in restoring to a point prior to it happening, but it did not fix
the issue.
I have checked my processes and cpu performance in task manager, and nothing
appears to be out of line. I do not have a lot of stuff loading at startup,
I have my system fairly lean. I have all the latest drivers for my sound,
video, motherboard, etc. I had disabled, ctfmon, and cthelper, in msconfig,
but re-enabled them in case that had something to do with it, but it did not
help.
I also had disabled script debugging ( IE ), along with script debugging
(other), in Internet Explorer's advanced options, but re-enabled them, with
no change.
I am running XP Pro SP2, with all updates, on an Msi K8N Neo4 Plat Nforce4
mb, with AMD X2 4400+ dual core processor. I also have Office XP, and it has
all it's udpates. My system has not exactly been stable since building it 6
months ago, but this I believe to be an unrelated issue. I have also ran
memtest86 over night, with no errors reported on my ram.
I have thought about running SFC Scannow, to see if any damaged files need
replacing, or even trying a repair install, but was hoping to resolve it
before going to that extreme.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
I will be out most of the day, will check back later this evening.
Thanks,
Don Burnette
