Delay in opening Windows Explorer

Sometimes, it could take up to 50 seconds to open WE, especially if I try
using WindowsLogo-E. Right clicking on Start and selecting Explore is
usually much faster. Other times, both ways of opening WE are almost
instantaneous (say, about two seconds). Once open, I can click on any of the
+ boxes and the subfolder open in an instant.

I've defragged and checked for viruses/spyware/etc. The computer does NOT
automatically search for neetwork folders and printers. I can't predict the
opening time based on whether other programs are open or not, or whether I
freshly rebooted.

There is no problem with my keyboard. The E key works all the time, and
other WindowsLogo hot keys combinations work.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I should have added that it doesn't matter if antivirus/spyware program
(Verizon Internet Security Suite) is on or off.
