defrag & C:WINDOWS/0

Guest

I tried defragmenting (in safe mode) my C drive (a few times) and I am left
with 21% still fragmented.
The report showed that files c:windows/0 had over 800 files that could not
be defragmented and file c:windows/4 had over 400 files

When I rebooted, I was warned that I was critically low on space. My "C"
partition is 16 Gig and it only contains Windows XP sp2 and some safety
software such as antivirus, antispyware and firewall.

When I look in Explorer, I find the following strange files:
C:WINDOWS/0 1 375 440 System file
C:WINDOWS/4 1 375 440 System file
C:WINDOWS/6 1 375 440 System file
C:WINDOWS/8 1 375 440 System file
C:WINDOWS/9 1 375 440 System file

I also had this critically low space problem a few months ago and the
problem was the System Volume Information that was full due to the System
Restore not functionning.

Unfortunetly, I do not remember how I had cleared the System Volume
Information file and my System Retore has never worked since I reformated
back in September.

Any help?

Run Disk Cleanup. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
Cleanup with
Temporary Internet Files, Offline Web Pages (optional), System Restore
( more Options tab )
and Recycle Bin selected for deletion. If you have more than one drive /
partition you may
need to do this operation for each drive / partition. Then run Disk
Defragmenter.

The amount of free space is very important when running Disk
Defragmenter. A
minimum of 15% is required but sometimes 20% is desirable if the drive /
partition
contains one or more large files. You can run Disk Defragmenter a second
and third
time if files are still fragmented after the first run. You can put
files more prone to
fragment in their own partitions.

If you use Outlook Express regularly compacting Outlook Express before
running
Disk Defragmenter is helpful.

Disk Defragmenter provides a "Most fragmented files" list. When a
fragmented file is
larger than the largest pocket of free space available then the files is
not fragmented.
Running Disk Defragmenter a second or third time does move files around
and can
reduce / eliminate the contents of the "Most fragmented files" list. The
more free
space on the drive / partition, the more likely it is that all fragments
will be
eliminated.

Free space cannot be defragmented with the Windows XP Disk Defragmenter.
Neither can your pagefile cannot be defragmented because the file is in
use whilst
Disk Defragmenter is running. You can purchase other Defragmenting
Utilities e.g.
Perfect Disk, which will defragment your pagefile and free space.
Another option is to
place your pagefile in it's own partition. A pagefile partition is best
located as the first
partition on a second hard drive. You should leave a small page file at
the original
location.

All you mention is good practice.
Before I defrag, I always run disk cleanup, then go in manually to remove
theother undisired files. I di not however compacted my mail folders.

Ihave been trying several times since yesterday to defragment my c drive.
All other drives work fine, bu when I started yesterday, I think I had 35%
free space left on the C partition, and after several attemps, I am left with
an critically low space.

All software works fine, so I don't think defrag is dropping a halph
processed file here and there, but it has to be creating some umonguest log,
hence to progressivelly dimineshing free space.

But from there, I donno what else to try.

Look at System Restore on the More Options tab of the Disk CleanUp
utility. That will create more free space, which is what you need.

Nope, That didn't do it either.

back in September.

My suggestion was made to get a better result from running Disk
Defragmenter not to get the System Restore function to work. I am not a
fan of System Restore. I have never used it to restore my system in 2
years. You could turn it off and forget about it! You most likely will
not miss it.

Hey did anyone sort this ?

i have 5 or 6 1.5gb file in the windows directory takin up loads of space and i cannot delete them or find out what uses them, similar to the ones below they are hidden system files with just one character file names.

>>>>>C:WINDOWS/0
>>>>>C:WINDOWS/4
>>>>>C:WINDOWS/6
>>>>>C:WINDOWS/8
>>>>>C:WINDOWS/9

I cannot delete these even in safe mode, or even identify what uses them though the are constantly in use.

Any help appreciated as my PC is going to die soon !

Does No one have a clue ??

usually you can identify the files and what uses them but as these are indiscriminate single characters with no extension it is quite hard to do so - Please help
