Definition Update for Windows Defender-KB91557 (Definition 1.49.52

I installed this update and my computer would not restart. I had to restore
back to a previous date on my computer just to get it to start. Thinking
there was something wrong with my computer, when I got it up and running
again I reinstalled it only to have my computer not start up again. When I
ran a diagnostic repair on it the report stated that a "patch" was preventing
my computer from restarting. Once again, I restored the computer to a few
days ago and it started right up again. Here the update is again, wanting me
to install it again. Has anybody else had this problem? I have a good
Anti-Virus on my computer and do not really need Defender but can't make the
update icon in my tray disappear, even when I ignore the update. Any advice?
Thank you in Advance

There is something fishy going on on your computer. There is no such KB
as 91557. You think it's related to Windows Defender? WD updates do not
require Windows restart after installation, so that's another strange thing.

I recommend that you
- update WD from within (Help | Check for Updates)
- run a full scan of your system with WD
- run a full scan of your system with your antivirus app

Pat, thank you for your response. When I click on the icon for Windows
update (bottom right hand near my clock) it says New Updates are available.

When I click on it to open the Windows Update Screen and View Available
Updates, at the bottom past the Recommended and Optional Updates is one that
says (in blue) Windows Defender and it reads "Definition Update for Windows
Defender - KB91557 (Definition 1.49.523.0)

Somebody at my office told me today that they "heard" of a virus going
around that resembles a windows update and does bizarre things to the
computer - I hope that isn't what it is but it sure seems that way given what
you are telling me.

I'm going to follow your advice and see what happens. I have Kaspersky
Internet Security for my Anti-Virus and downloaded all of the updates for it
this evening.

Thank you again for your reply!

Could it be that you mean 'KB915597' - which is in fact the Windows
Defender update article by Microsoft? If so, I don't know why this
prevents your computer from restarting.

Try earlier suggestion to update WD from itself via Help | Check for
Updates.

Thank you both for your help. I ran the updates and did full scans and
everything seems to be working just fine again.

Thank you!

Hi Adrienne,

Thanks for posting back. That's always a nice gesture when we get back a
