For the slow (dialup) connection, I'd just stick with the standard method of
update which uses autoupdate. This should not impact your normal use of the
connection, and it should "just work"--although it will take time.
For a machine with no internet connection, watch for messages, often posted
by Engel., when new definitions appear. He typically includes a long URL
which allows for direct retrieval of the definition update file. That
download can be placed on some form of removable media which can be read by
the machine that needs updating.
