Default Mail Client

G

Gianni

I started getting a message from Windows
that I don't have
a Default Mail Client.

The problem was caused when I installed an
update of the Office Suite and it tried
to make
Outlook my default mail client; I use
Thunderbird.

Is there some place I can change or return
the settings to what I had before?

Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Set Program Access and Defaults |
Custom + Down Arrow | Select the radio button for Thunderbird.

Thanks Bruce. I tried your suggestion,
but the problem wasn't fixed.

The message I get is when I try
formatting an envelope in Word or
WordPerfect:

"Either there is no default mail client
or the current mail client cannot
fulfill the messaging request.
Please run MS Outlook and set it as the
default mail client."

I don't know where to go to get this
cleared up. Any suggestions.

I don't want Outlook as the default.

See if either of these articles help. For the one about Outlook Express,
just substitute Thunderbird for OE.

I tried the suggestions in the articles,
but they don't help.

I noticed the changes I made through
Control Panel were
ignored and reset back to using the
present program.
I tried changing it a couple of times,
but it just ignored
the changes and reset my choices.

What does it show as the default e-mail client under Internet Options ->
Programs tab?

Are you using the classic login screen (where you enter your login
credentials) or the Welcome Screen (which is the fluffy bobblehead
display of multiple accounts you click on)?

In the unidentified version of Outlook, did you configure it to NOT
reenable itself as the default e-mail client? After doing that, did you
go into Thunderbird and configure it to always be the default e-mail
client?

The default e-mail client under internet
options is Thunderbird.

login screen: Do you mean when I start
the computer each day?
I and my wife are the only users; my
wife uses my login.

I think that you put your finger on my
creating the problem. When
Outlook was installing and trying to
make itself the default e-mail
client without asking, I panicked; so I
probably didn't complete
something I should have.

I am going to try something Ken Springer
suggested which involves
going into the Registry; I'm not too
happy about that, but the
instructions seem mostly straightforward.

At the moment, the problem only comes up
when I'm printing
envelopes, but I don't think I should
ignore it because it might
cause some other problem later on.

And what login screen do you see? Is it the classic login screen (where
you actually enter BOTH your username and password)? Or is it the
bobblehead Welcome Screen (where you click on an account and then just
enter the password)? Do you even see a login screen (i.e., did you
configure Windows to auto-login)?

Classic screen: http://tinyurl.com/3bvnsd6
Welcome Screen: http://tinyurl.com/4xgvyp6

As I recall (but I can't find the article right now), there is also a
configuration when using the Welcome Screen as to which e-mail client is
the default. Peculiarly it seems independent of the one you configure
in Internet Options -> Programs -> Email client.

Try this:

Right-click on Start button
Start Menu tab
Select "Start menu" (top choice) [this selects the Welcome Screen login]
Click Customize button

What is listed under "Show on Start menu" for E-mail client?

I believe I auto-login. I don't see any
login screen.
I remember when I set up the machine
that I didn't
want to have to login every time.

Internet Options > Programs > e-mail client

has Thunderbird.

I remember looking somewhere at one time
that listed all the users and I was the
only
user.

Thunderbird is listed for e-mail client.

Thunderbird comes up as my default
e-mail client. I set it back to
Thunderbird after Outlook
messed with it. The problem is that
other applications, Word and
WordPerfect, seem to
think Outlook is my e-mail client when I
print
envelopes.

Sometimes it takes a state change to effect a result change. That is,
change the default e-mail client to Outlook or Outlook Express. Exit
whatever config dialog you were in. Then go back to the config and
change it to Thunderbird. I've seen where it said one thing but really
wasn't set that way, so you move away and then move back to get the
settings really established.

I did as you suggested.

It cleared up the problem with WordPerfect,
but Word seems to want Outlook as the e-mail
client when creating envelopes. It also
gives
an error message about getting an address
book from ? exchange.

Since it cleared up the problem for
WordPerfect
I am assuming there is only a problem with
Office Suite, not with anything else.

Thanks for taking the time to stick with
me on this.

What does printing envelopes have to do with sending e-mails?

I don't know how you are printing envelopes. You never mention any
version of any software you are using (Outlook, Thunderbird, Word,
WordPerfect, Windows XP). I'm using Word 2003. The Tools -> Letters
and Mailings -> Envelopes and Labels wizard doesn't do e-mail. It's a
print form function in Word. Also, Word is a word processor, not an
e-mail client, so it doesn't use the Windows or Exchange address books.
It has e-mail functions that it can call but by then you're sending the
document outside of Word to the designated e-mail client, not printing
an envelope.

In my original post, I said I installed an
update to Office, I should have said I
updated to Office 2010. Outlook is part
of the Office Suite. I suspect that it's
integration with the Suite is causing
the problem.

I have no idea why installing Office
2010 should have caused the messages
when I go to print envelopes in Word
which is part of the Office Suite other
than it wants to go look at an exchange
address book on the web and apparently
uses Outlook to do it. I'm guessing.

What are the exact steps you perform to print envelopes in Word 2010?

Are you using Mail Merge in Word?

I'm not using Mail Merge in Word.

I click
Mailings > Envelope
which brings up the
Envelopes and Labels Menu.

I then click either of the icons
to change the return address
or look up addresses for the
Delivery Address.

At that point a Microsoft Office Outlook
menu appears with the following message.

"Either there is no default mail client
or the current mail client cannot
fulfill the message request. Please run
Microsoft Outlook and set it as your
default mail client."

I was getting the same problem with
WordPerfect until I tried your
suggestions and it cleared up in
WordPerfect, but remains a problem in
Word; a problem I can live with.

I was worried that I had screwed up
everything when I installed Office 2010.

Only a workaround, but there are many ways to export TBird's info to
Outlook. Do a search.

I found the following which explains why
Word wants Outlook to be the mail client.

"There is no address book or contacts in
Word. It is Outlook that is the email
client which has the contacts database.
If you don’t have Outlook, what do you
use as your email client? That may have
what you are looking for."
