Deactivate login

E

Everett Joline

My Win2K computer requires that anyone on the LAN login
before accessing the computer. Since I'm the only one on the
LAN I would like to deactivate that unneeded step.

Can anyone give me a clue as to where I can turn if off?

Thanks,
E-Jo

Control Panel|Users and Passwords, then uncheck the box for "Users must
enter a user name and password to use this computer"

Thanks Dave, but I went there and found that
the box was _not_ checked.

So I tried changing the password to null. That worked OK.
But I still need to enter my user name every time I initiate
access.

Also, I've tried everything (including posts on this and other sites)
but have never found a way for this Win2K computer to
access a printer on a WinXP computer that all other
computers _can_ access.

What might be set wrong on this computer?
Should I reinstall something?

Thanks,
E-Jo

See tip 0004 » Bypassing the WinNT logon prompt.
in the 'Tips & Tricks' at http://www.jsifaq.com

or use TweakUI

On the WXP box, turn off simple file sharing
and enable the guest account on the W2K box hosting the share.

PS. I assume this isd a home network (workgroup)

For an "NT"ish operating system you can run regedit.exe and navigate to;
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
edit the Reg_Sz string values
"DefaultUserName"
and
"DefaultPassword"
to reflect the correct username and password. (note: the password for an
autologon account can not be blank)
and set the value of "AutoAdminLogon" to "1"
also
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system
"DontDisplayLastUserName" = 0

OK, thanks Dave & Jerold for your input
I see that there are some sites out there that specialize in questions
like mine. However, even so, it's still very difficult for me to find
the answer in all that great data.

I'll download TweakUI etc and see if it can help. It seems like such
a simple question that I shouldn't need to screw around with regedit.etc.
Thanks again,
E-Jo

The problem is automatic logon is already set but someone changed the
password for the account hence the reason you must manually resync. More
than likely as simple as updating "DefaultPassword" in the registry.
