De-installed, but still in the program list ...

I have some trouble with catalog names "Program" resp "Program Files".
Somehow this has caused that a certain program (Apache) is shown in the
services list, although it is deinstalled. This obviously prevents a correct
reinstallation. How can I remove it from the list of services?

By "list of services" I refer to the list you reach by right clicking on
"this computer" etc. (my Windows Vista is Swedish spoken).

Can you provide more information about "shown in the services list"? If you
think my question is vague then you are feeling the way that others feel
when questions are vague such as "shown in the services list".

A free translation from Swedish is all I can give, but let's try:
Right click on "This computer".
Press "Manage" (maybe it is called "Handle" in English...?)
Double click on "Services and Programs"
Double click on "Services"

This shows a list of all registered programs/routines with name, description
and state (activated, deactivated etc). That is the list I referred to
earlier.
In that list the program "Apache" is present, marked as "deactivated". It
should not be present at all, since it is uninstalled.
Question: How can I remove the program "Apache" from that list?

Any better?

Yes, that is better.

So the Apache service is deactivated. I am sorry that I don't know how to
remove it but I doubt that there is any problem with it being there.
Probably the English word is "disabled" instead of "deactivated" and I will
assume that is the situation.

You say however that there is a problem so I hope we can fix that. What is
it that you are trying to reinstall and can you be more specific about the
error that you are getting?

I intend to install the server program Apache. I installed the old version,
and removed it again, in order to install the latest version instead. The
deinstallation worked, except that the program is still noted in the list
(described below), although marked as deactivated.
Problem: Apache should now not be present in that list - will it interfere
with the new version?

Anyway - I installed the latest version to see what happened. It showed
that the service Apache now was installed with a new name, so there was no
collision. The old (deactivated) and the new (activated) are both present in
the list and it seems to work ok so far.

If the existence of the old service is a potential problem then I hope
someone will say so. My guess is that it is not a problem except that it is
reasonable to remove it entirely just to be sure.

You can try starting the disabled service to see what happens. Probably it
will complain that it cannot start the service.
