ddraw error - power dvd - direct X!!??

I think there is a problem with the direct X.

Overnight the DVD playback has stopped working. I open
Power DVD, the sound plays, but visually all I get is a
screen saying the DDraw Overlay mode needs to be
used???!!!
I have installed no software since I last watched a DVD...

Action taken: Different resolution (no effect), different
colour settings (no effect), reinstalled video drivers
for radeon 9200 graphics card (no effect), reinstalled
Microsoft direct X (no effect), rolled back to a previous
restore point (no effect).

Surely watching a DVD should not be this complex.

OK, after extensive research it seems like there may be a
conflict with the remote desktop utility. I will post
info tomorrow as to how things go.
