DDE-Connection

Tweety

Hi,

when I've done a merge between Word 97 and Access 97
document. And I try running it on a Windows XP computer
with Office 2003. I get a DDE-connection error. But I've
got another computer with Windows XP and Office 2003 and
there it works fine.
Is this a setting in Office or a service or maybe a
program that needs to be installed?

Hi Tweety,

BAsically, it seems to be a configuration problem in
Windows on individual machines.

If you want to reliably share mail merge documents/Access
databases between versions of Word, then I advise you to
use an ODBC connection.

How do you do that with office 97??
And do you need to make a whole new document or can you
use the one you already have?

You can use the document you already have. Just activate
the "Select method" checkbox in the Open Data source dialog
box so that you can choose to use ODBC.

But then it doesn't work with Office 97 anymore, or do you
need it to do with Word 97??

Well I tried it using Word 2003. There was a screen where
you could choose the connection. But when I try open it in
97 it doesn't work anymore. So it needs to work in 97 and
in 2003.

And did you choose ODBC, or did you choose OLE DB? ODBC should
work fine in all versions of Office. OLE DB will only work for
Office 2002/2003.
