DCPROMO PROBLEMS

S

ShaunG

Have A Network with a dc called "BART" And File server called "homer" both
running win 2000 server.
am trying to run dcpromo on homer and where you entre the domain it
automatically entres "simpsons.local"
i have to remove the .local or it wont go any further.
the next screen where it asks about the dns it assumes simpsons.local again
and you have to remove the .local
or it wont continue. once u remove the .local it comes up with a box saying
the "simpsons" domain refers to "simpsons.local"
yes or no. click yes and asks for where the ad is to be located o the
machine "homer"
once you go throught that it brings up the box showing its looking for the
server. once going for a couple of seconds
it brings up another box saying cannot find domain or computer account
HOMER$ was not found.
i have checked and the account is on the DC under computers in AD.
any help is apppreciated

Why are you removing the .local, unless its a .com or .net or something?
Unless it's a single label name called "SIMPSONS"? Single label names are
very problematic with DNS.

Curious, what is the AD DNS domain name on BART? Is it a single label name?

Are you ONLY pointing to your internal DNS that AD is currently using? If
you have an ISP's address, that can be problematic as well.

dont fully understand what a single label name is but when first setting up
the server it asked if i had a domain and if not just type .local so i did
because the
network does not have a internet connection.
thanks

DNS is required by AD. DNS follows a hierarchal naming structure, such as
domain.local, domain.com, etc. From the NT days, this didn't exist, so NT
used single label domain names, such as "DOMAIN" or "SIMPSON".

If migrating/upgrading to AD, your design should reflect the new
requirements. On top of that, DNS doesn't play well with single label names
and numerous issues WILL result if you choose a single label name, because
DNS cannot handle it, whether connected to the Internet or not. Since AD is
based on DNS (it stores its resource and service locations in the form of
SRV records in DNS), and DNS is a hierarchal structure, then we need to
choose a hierarchal name.

Shaun,

I might jump in for a second on Ace's behalf.

A single label name is one where there is not ".something" behind the name.
For example, instead of having simpsons.com or simpsons.local or
simpsons.edu you simply have simpsons - see what we are saying?

Cary

I hope Shaun understands the implications.

Cheers!

Where are you removing this? What step in the dcpromo wizard exactly is it
telling you this? Can you provide a screen shot of the wizard or describe
the screen in detail?
