Subject: DCOM Error 10002
Date: Wed, 12 May 2004 05:36:08 -0700
We are receiving the following in the System Log on our SBS 2K server with
SP4 installed:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10002
Date: 12/05/2004
Time: 09:09:47
User: N/A
Computer: OurComputerName
Description:
Access denied attempting to launch a DCOM Server. The server is:
{00020906-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
The user is Unavailable/Unavailable, SID=Unavailable.
This is happening roughly every 30 minutes. Can anyone point me in the
direction of what is causing this.
Cheers

If you look in the registry you will see that the GUID refers to the
Microsoft Word Document COM class. It appears that another application is
attempting to access it, but is not succeeding. Obviously we can't tell by
the error which application is try access it.
The first thing you want to do is make sure that the access permissions on
the COM class have not been altered from their defaults:
Start > Run > dcomcnfg
Highlight the GUID we are working with and click Properties.
On the General Authentication Level should be "Default"
On the Security tab ensure that only default permissions are selected
Restart the machine
The second thing that I would do would be to scan for spyware/malware, just
in case it is an unwanted app that is causing the error.
If the messages persist, boot up in Safe Mode. If the errors stop than you
can narrow it down to one of the services/applications that start
automatically, and go on from that point.
The other way that I believe you could "workaround" this error, is to set
the permissions on the COM class so that permissions are not necessary.
This would be done by running "dcomcnfg" and setting the authentication
level to "(None)" on the properties of the class on the Application tab.
Let me know if any of this helps.
