DC replacement.

I have had some issues in the past when replacing a domain controller with anotherone of the same name. I am in the process of installing two new exchange 2000 servers and replacing our existing one with an exchange 2003 front-end server. Right now I have the old one (which is a DC) and one of the new ones running side by side and am moving all mailboxes as needed, but this weekend I hope to remove exchange 2000 from the old one, demote it, install exchange 2003 as a front-end and move it to the DMZ. What is the correct procedure for this? dcpromo to demote, disjoin the domain and delete the computer account? dcpromo only?

DCPROMO in order to demote the current Domain Controller, Remove the
Computer from the domain. Remove the Domain Controller from AD Sites and
Services, Clean up the DNS from records related to this the domain
controller ensure changes are replicated or replicate manually if necessary.
Join the new computer.

The problem starts right there -- "replacing a DC with anothter of the same
name."

While it is possibly, it isn't generally the best way to approach such
issues.

If you are doing this because the DC is also an Exchange server, file
server, or
something else the users connect to by "fixed name" then you likely should
take
this opportunity to SPLIT the roles.

Althought a DC can be used for other purposes, in the larger networks, this
is seldom done (except for related services like Name resolution.)
