data transfer

i have just puchased a new laptop and want to transfer
data from my old computer to the new one, email contacts
and my emails, music files and other data. i was trying
to use the suggested method of a serial connection and
the files and settings transfer wizard, this appeared to
be okay but when i clicked the box to open the port it
searched for 10 minutes without openning, how do i
acheive easy data transfer without copying everything to
a disc which is very time consuming. both computers are
running windows xp professional

Are you using the correct type of cable as per the Help & Support
article? Please post back and tell us if the old computer is also a
laptop and if both machines have ethernet connectors.
