Dat files

I installed an external hard drive. I moved all my files and programs from
the main drive over to the external drive. They were compressed and are on
the external drive as dat files. I am unable to uncompress them now. I get
error messages when i attempt to do this.

I have a lot of important data that i need o get access to. Any help would
be greatly appreciated.

Do we have to guess what the messages are?

Actually it said not supported file type when I have tried to recover them. I
have them recovered, but now I don't how to even guess what they are or where
they belong. Is there anyway to make them into different file types or really
to find out what kind of files they truly are. They are not just dat files
anymore.
