.dat extensions - opening a MediaFace file

Does anyone know how to open extensions downloaded / sent by
e-mail? I have received a Media Face project which I was
expecting but I can't seem to open it. I have gone into Control
Panel > Folder Options > File Types, and have tried putting in
the extension that is showing in the attachment - which is
".dat". However my computer says another program is using .dat.
I then scrolled down the Advanced tab and tried clicking on
"MediaFace Project" but that made no difference.

I don't think MediaFace it is actually a .dat extension. I
thought the .dat extension was to do with system files. Anyway,
I'm at a loss as to how to deal with this. Any ideas anyone?

Many thanks.

Do you have Media Face installed on YOUR computer?

Hi,

The .dat extension is not used by any particular program, it is a generic
data extension that is used by a multitude of programs. The .dat file should
be opened with the program that was used to create it.

Yes, Richard, I installed it on all 3 computers which are needed
to look at the thing I am working on. That's what I meant when I
said I scrolled down to try to make an association with MediaFace
in the "add associations" box. MediaFace came up as a program
because it is on my computer but when I tried to associate .dat
with it, it told me that .dat was associated with something else.
I altered teh association to Media Face but it's still not
opening. I've just noticed that the Media Face Project that came
to me has a .mfp extension. I should probably have set up a new
one so I'll have a go. In the meantime, of course, I have
disassociated the original .dat one with whatever it was
associated with!

Ah, well, Rick. Looks like I've messed that one up already. I
should have written it down but have already altered its
association. Not sure if that was right or not. Probably not.
Thanks anyway.

Hi,

Go to Folder Options, click on the File types tab, then scroll down and
delete .dat if it's listed. Next time you try to access a .dat file, the
system will prompt you to select a program (just don't enable the "always
use...." option).

Thanks Rick. I must have done that the other day anyway, cos I've
just been to look and the .dat tab was missing.
