D-Link DSL-G604T

Hi,

Back in June, I bought a D-Link DSL-G604T modem/router and because it was
noisy when the the dsl line was connected (it made a high-pitched hissing
noise), I sent it back. D-Link then sent me another but this one failed to
"find" the dsl telephone line so I sent that one back too. So D-Link sends
me another and lo-and-behold, I have the same problem ! If I recall rightly,
the first router found the dsl connection (the light on the router lit up)
and then it was up to me the configure the connection so I was up and
running fairly quickly. I find it hard to believe that 2 routers can have
the same problem so I wonder if its something I'm missing. The LAN works
fine by the way.

Anyone have any ideas ?

Cheers

but it had no effect so i just put up with it at the moment.

Terry,

After further research, I have found that many other people complain
about the noise which is unacceptable. I again tried to connect the
router to the dsl line yesterday with no luck. Resetting the box didn't
change anything so I'm looking for a full refund. Now I've got to find
another router and this appears to a problem because there's a lot of
junk out there - Linksys' customers aren't too happy with the WAG54G,
the Belkin 54G isn't too good either so now I'm looking at 3Com's
OfficeConnect range. Sigh.

Terry,

After further research, I have found that many other people complain
about the noise which is unacceptable.

Noise emanating from these types of equipment is often from
noisey inductors. If that is the case, it is due to the
design and it will be typical that if one specimen exhibits
it, many more would too. The easiest solution is to get
some epoxy and liberally coat the inductor coils... but of
course that voids your warranty. There are no high-voltages
inside one of these (presuming it has an external power
supply brick) so you could open it up, and firmly grasp the
inductors between your fingers (observing static discharge
precautions of course) to see if that quiets them, and
pinpoint which inductor(s) is noisey.

I again tried to connect the
router to the dsl line yesterday with no luck. Resetting the box didn't
change anything so I'm looking for a full refund. Now I've got to find
another router and this appears to a problem because there's a lot of

the Belkin 54G isn't too good either so now I'm looking at 3Com's
OfficeConnect range. Sigh.

Keep in mind that hundreds of thousands of these things are
sold and that for the most part people use them fine. It's
the small percentage that are faulty (or users who don't
configure them properly) that create most of the negative
publicity. Having written that, I find Belkin equipment to
be a cheaper constructed product and would avoid their parts
in general though I don't recall any experience (or not)
with that specific model.

Something else you could do is locate the part(s) possible,
out of hearing range. Over a LAN that is usually relatively
easy to do.

Kony,

Thanks. I hear you when you say that 1000s of these boxes are sold and
that the majority of users are happy with them and I am sure that is
what the manufacturer wants to hear as well. However, since June, I
have had 3 (three) D-Link DSL-G604T's the first of which worked but
which was noisy and the other two had (have) problems with the dsl
connection which they failed to find. Yesterday, I actually purchased a
3Com OfficeConnect router and the installation went like a dream - 3
pcs configured and up and running within a matter of minutes. What a
relief !

Cheers
