CX5200 Cartridge Error

This is all pilot error and I'm hoping for some suggestions....

The yellow cartridge was running out, so I put in a brand new
Print-Rite cartridge and the yellow would not print out. I tried
another new one and the same thing. I replaced all cartridges
with Print-Rite and the print pattern showed to be extremely
clogged. Multiple cleans did no good.

This morning I tried refilling the old Epson cartridge. I put into
the printer and even though it showed to be full (I have a chip
resetter) the yellow would not print so if was off to get a new
Epson cartridge.

Upon returning from the store, I noticed the yellow had leaked
into the printer and I was getting a 'cartridge error' on it.

I used a paper towel to soak up most of the yellow fluid and put
a brand new Epson yellow into the machine. I still get the
error. Thinking the wet ink was causing some kind of short, I
waited a few hours for it to dry. No such luck. I still get
the error.

Any suggestions other than buying a new one or sending it to be
fixed (which wouldn't be cost effective). This one is all my
fault for not sealing the cartridge good. I haven't figured out
how to get into the guts of the machine. There must be some hidden
screws or something.

I noticed the Office Despot had their own line of cartridges which
just so happened to be the exact same design as Print-Rite. Has
anyone had luck with them in a CX5200 ? I've not had much luck
in the past with Epson & refills.

TIA.

Unfortunately CX5200 is crap after the first set of ink cart are
replaced. When you replace them, they often won't work well or even
not at all.

My brother has a CX5200 and it worked great when the original set of
ink carts but when it came to replacing them, he has to do at least 3
or 4 nozzle cleaning job before printing anything. He did have the
printer off when not in use as suggested by Epson so that is not the
cause. I think there's a design issue with the printer head that
causes problems.

I'd suggest the cx5400 instead if your 5200 is still within the store
return limit.

I haven't tried taking apart the cx5200 yet and I probably wont bother
as there's too many moving parts (scanner included) and if they are
put together wrong, the print or scans would be out of alignment or
worse.

Not within the return limit, unfortunately. I went out and
bought an RX500. I'll give their 6 ink system a chance.
The main reason I got it over the CX6600 was the slide/neg
scanning setup. I'll probably never use a 3rd party cartridge
in it because of my past woes with the CX5200. With the extra
2 colors, I hope the yellow doesn't run out as fast as before!

As much as epson and their ink/clogging issues bother me, the
useability of their multi-use printers are great for me. I've
got an HP7790 for the family and I don't like having to replace
a cartridge when only 1 color gets low.

Most users will tell you to leave it ON when not in use.
It's in Epson's interest to recommend the opposite as there will be a nozzle
clean (=more expensive ink used, eh eh eh) on switch on.

Can you explain the exact printer error that is showing? If it
something showing on your monitor, or a series of lights blinking, or what?

There are a lot of things that can cause non-printing after replacing a
cartridge. Usually it is either an air lock or a dried screen in the
printer nipple (the spike that punctures the ink cartridge). With 3rd
party ink cartridges, there are a number of other possible causes. Some
require you pull a tab to open an air vent, some have a mild
incompatibility with the Epson ink, causing clogging, some have a bubble
in the cartridge at the opening, some use ink that is too thick, etc.

Some of the older Epsons did not park the head fully and close the air
valve on the cleaning station without shutting it fully off.

The printer will get warmer when left on, and this may cause the inks to
be thicker over time, or the heads to dry.

It wastes some electricity and does cause wear on the electronic components.
