Custom startup sound

Hi:

I want to play a custom .wav file of any length or size at startup.
Currently I've encountered two problems.

1. Substituting my .wav file for the Windows start sound, XP truncates
playback at less than 5 seconds.

2. Running mplay32.exe in the startup folder in a cmd or .vbs file, it
doesn't seem possible to suppress the UI on playback. The /play /
close command line parms work as expected, but the UI progress window
still pops up.

Any explanations or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Roy,

I use custom Startup abd Exit sounds in a number of computers, e.g.
the intro to Billy Idol's "White Wedding". The longest I'm able to get
to run is 15 seconds, including fade-in and fade-out. Have you tried
a .wav file of less than 15 seconds? Like yourself, I tried a script
for a player without much success. Sorry can't be more help.

Use sndRec32 (Sound Recorder) with the embedding switch(e.g.) :
sndrec32 /embedding /play c:\windows\Media\chimes.wav

and add it as a shortcut in your Startup folder.

To increase the maximum recording time in the Sound Recorder utility:

Make sure your microphone is muted so it will not pick up sound.
Click Record, and then let Sound Recorder run for 60 seconds.
After Sound Recorder stops recording, click Save As on the File menu, and
name the file Blank.wav.

You can repeat this step once for each additional minute of recording time
that you want to add. For example, for a 5-minute recording time, insert the
Blank.wav file five times.

It has to do with size rather than length. Use as an example this .wav
stopped at 13 seconds.

A .wav encoded at CD quality (44kHz, 16-bit stereo), size 5.21MB, plays for
13 seconds. Saved at radio quality (22kHz, 8-bit mono), size 668KB, plays
in full.
