Custom Slide Show

I'm trying to set up a custom slide show that is a shortened version of the
main slide show. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to add a slide
directly to the custom show that is not already in the main show. Also, I
can't figure out how to use the slide sorter view just for the custom show.
Can either of these things be done?

I believe that slides in the custom show all have to be part of the main
show so you can't add something directly to the custom show. You have to
first add it to the main show and then edit the custom show to add it there.
Also, I don't believe you can view just the custom show in slide sorter
view. If you want to rearrange the custom show, you have edit the custom
show, which is not as easy to work with as slide sorter view.

Bob,

you don't mention what 'version' of powerpoint you are using (always a good
thing to mention)

You cannot view 'just' the custom show in the slide sorter.

You can add a slide to an existing custom show.

in powerpoint 2003

slide show menu > custom shows >highlight an existing show name > edit >
highlight a slide in the left hand column - click "add" to add it to you
custom show.

cheers

No, a custom show is a subset of the current show; it cannot include slides
from a different presentation.

Unfortunately, the editing tools for custom shows are very primitive. You
don't get to view them in the main window (it doesn't even show the slide
numbers for the slides, just the numbered order in the slide show).

I hope that this feature will get a revamp in the new version (but I'm not
holding my breath)

Sorry I forgot to mention I have PowerPoint 2007. It would certainly be a
lot easier if you could view (and edit) the custom show from the sorter.
Also, to add a slide, it seems it has to be in the main show before I can
use the process you mention below to add it to the custom show. I even
tried adding a slide to the main show, then adding it to the custom and
deleting it from the main; but that also deletes it from the custom show.
Seems like a potential enhancement is called for. If I want to use a single
slide in the custom version to replace two or more slides in the main
version, seemingly it can't be done. I think I have to copy the entire main
version and then edit it as a separate file to get what I want.

As I mentioned, a custom show is a subset of the current presentation. If you
delete a slide from the presentation, you will delete it from the show as
well.

If you want to have a custom show to show one slide instead of another in
the main presentation, then both slides need to be in the presentation. You
can create a custom show for each 'version', showing only the slides that are
pertinent to that version.
