Tried all 7 suggestions Jupiter Jones provided, and
Cryptographic Services still won't start. I keep getting
error 193: 0xc1. Am about ready to pound the whole PC to
pieces and get a Mac. Help!

SYMPTOMS
When trying to install a Microsoft update or service pack,
the following error message may appear:
<Update or service pack name> Setup could not verify the
integrity of the file. Make sure the Cryptographic service
is running on this computer
CAUSE
The Cryptographic Services startup type is set to
Disabled.

A log file or database is corrupted in the %Systemroot%
\System32\Catroot2 folder.

THINGS TO TRY

1. Set the Cryptographic Services startup type to
Automatic: a. Click Start, and then right-click My
Computer (or right-click My Computer on the desktop).
b. Click Manage, and then double-click Services and
Applications.
c. Double-click Services.
d. Right-click Cryptographic Services, and then click
Properties.
e. From the Startup type list, select Automatic.
f. Click Start.
g. Install the update or service pack again. If the
issue is not resolved or Automatic was already selected in
the Startup type list, go to step 2.

2. Stop Cryptographic Services, and then rename the %
Systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 folder: a. Click Start,
and then click Run.
b. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
c. At the command prompt, type the following commands
and press ENTER after each line:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc
d. Type exit to close the command prompt, and then
install the update or service pack again.

Good Luck! I am doing this now with a customer!

For information on the Cryptographic Services

Start the RPC Service
1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then
click Computer Management.
2. Double-click Services and Applications, click Services, and then
double-click Remote Procedure Call (RPC).
3. In the Startup type dialog box, click Automatic, click OK, and then
restart your computer.
NOTE: If the RPC Service is disabled, you may need to use the Recovery
Console.
In Recovery Console, run Enable RPCSS Service_Auto_Start, and then restart
your computer.

Well, enabling RPC was a new suggestion, but it's already
set to automatic and started. I've already tried
renaming the catroot2 folder. Cryptographic Servies is
set to Automatic but is stopped. When I tell it to
start, I get an error 193: 0xc1 Could not start the
Cryptographic Services service on Local Computer.
Anything else?
